Great little theater and place to see Arlo!  It was a wonderful night filled with song and story by one of the best in the business.  It's not a perfect recording, and I apologize for a few of the coughs as it was very dry and I found myself without any candy or something to sooth my throat. Highlight of the evening had to be everyone singing along to "My Peace", a perfect ending to a great show.

First and foremost, my apologies to Arlo and all involved - as well as all the purists out there - please don't hate me for this!

The recording you have here is not a normal concert, but rather a compilation spanning all three nights at the Guthrie Center.  I have tried to keep the continuity of the shows intact - but I did take a few liberties in order to provide a recording covering all three shows as well as condensing it to fit on a 2 CD set.  This is my first time ever putting together a project like this, and I do hope that you enjoy the
effort that went in to it.

Notes:
I had the levels set way too hot in the beginning, and was forced to pause the recording to lower them some - as a result there is a short gap in the first song (Black Dog).  There also was some weird interference or something during the song Monkey - not sure what caused that.  The recording was mastered on a MacBook running Sound Studio 3.5 and a pair of Sony MDR-7506 Professional headphones.  For the best possible listening experience - listen to on a good set of headphones that have a very flat response curve.  The mics were inside a hat above each ear.  Fades were added, along with some EQ and compression.

Notes:
This is one of my very first recordings and was basically just a mic sitting on a table with the recorder.  It definitely captures the performance quite well - it was loud and very much a bar type atmosphere.

For those who may not be aware Phlea Circus is/was a mostly cover band consisting of Abe Guthrie (Arlo's son) on keyboards, Randy Cormier on guitar and vocals and I don't remember who else had the guitar, and I had the impression there was no real set drummer.  Although it's mostly just covers - they did manage to throw in an original Xavier song.  Also, as an added bonus is a track called "Tomorrow's Gone" which I believe was written by Randy.  It is just him and his guitar playing at the Guthrie Center the day after if I recall correctly.  I don't believe this song appears anywhere else or I have ever heard it played live anywhere.

It's not the greatest quality - but worth checking out if you are a fan of Xavier - or just because!

Richie Havens is gifted with one of the most recognizable voices in popular music. His fiery, poignant, always soulful singing style has remained unique and ageless since he first emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 1960’s.  It’s a voice that has inspired and electrified audiences from the Woodstock Music & Arts Fair in 1969, to the Clinton Presidential Inauguration in 1993.  For over three decades, Richie has used his music to convey messages of brotherhood and personal freedom. With more than twenty-five albums released and a touring schedule that would kill many a younger man, he continues to view his calling as a higher one.

This was to be a very memorable show.  For those unaware, the Filene Center (part of Wolftrap Farm Park) is an outdoor venue, and this August evening was to be full of some great guitar and vocals.  As the evening progressed you can hear the crickets chirping away.  The sound was phenomenal, and I think this recording does a good job of recreating the show.  From the opening notes of All Along the Watchtower to the final note of Freedom, Richie puts on a hell of a show with some stories scattered in along the way.  My biggest compaint... It was too short of a set!

Texas singer/songwriter James McMurtry, known for his hard-edged character sketches, comes from a literary family; his father, novelist and screenwriter Larry McMurtry, gave James his first guitar at age seven, and his mother, an English professor, taught him how to play it. McMurtry began performing his own songs while a student at the University of Arizona and continued to do so after returning home and taking a job as a bartender. When it transpired that a film script McMurtry's father had written was being directed by John Mellencamp, who was also its star, McMurtry's demo tape was passed along, and Mellencamp was duly impressed, serving as co-producer on McMurtry's 1989 debut album, Too Long in the Wasteland. McMurtry also appeared on the soundtrack of the film (Falling from Grace), working with Mellencamp, John Prine, Joe Ely, and Dwight Yoakam in a one-off supergroup called Buzzin' Cousins. McMurtry has continued to record, releasing albums in 1992 and 1995. Walk Between the Raindrops followed in 1998. 2002 saw the release of Saint Mary of the Woods, his last for the Sugar Hill label.

This concert recording comes shortly after the release of St. Mary of The Woods.  Near the beginning of the show James tells a pretty humorous story about one of his previous shows at the Rams Head.  Being an audience recording, it does have it's flaws - but I think it captures the show pretty well.  Sorry about the occasional camera noise as I was shooting photos during the recording (both the cover and back photo are mine).  If you ever make it to the Rams Head for a show - I recommend an ice cold Helles Lager with your meal (or without)!
